CHARLIE WALKER

So… I never really got down to really talking about this guy,  but he was the very first local act in Jacksonville that I was exposed to. When I first moved to Florida, I had roommates who had his CD playing in the house all the time, album on repeat, and when we weren’t home, we’d travel with him playing in the car, even on the way to one of his gigs.

We saw him play alone in a small bar located in Atlantic Beach called “Fly’s Tie”. Charlie has the kind of voice that soothes you, and after a long day at work, it gets to be quite nice to indulge in his soulful sounds. Charlie looped his guitar, played the harmonica, and incorporated some beat boxing into his music, and it was always such a good time seeing him every Monday night. But then, it wasn’t enough. We couldn’t wait for Monday to roll around! So we started seeing him play at the Brix in Jacksonville Beach on Sundays with a full band (Justin Mandell on bass, Will Neal on drums, and Johnny Flood on saxophone). Then after a while, Sunday seemed too far away! So it was Culhane’s in Atlantic Beach on Tuesdays, Lynch’s in Jax Beach on Thursdays, sometimes Mellow Mushroom or Snapper’s in Jax Beach on Fridays, and then Mellow Mushroom in Southside on Saturdays. We’d find out on MYSPACE (yes that’s right, I said MYSPACE), where his next gig was just to go see him AGAIN. You might say we became a little stalkerish and obsessed, but it was always so much fun! We couldn’t help it.

Then when my roommates weren’t able to make it out as often because of their work schedule or what not, I started going to see him play with other friends of mine. I brought people from work, or my cousins, or anyone I could think of who would appreciate the great live music he produced.

The thing I loved most about Charlie Walker (other than his music), is that he never hogged the stage. He welcomed many other local artists on stage with him, or even let them play during his breaks… He’d announce their names and even tell us where we might be able to see them play around town on certain nights. Because of Charlie, I have come to know so many other great local acts in Jacksonville Beach.

I regret never having the chance to interview him for monzsense before I relocated to Austin, but you can find him on facebook and itunes to educate yourself about this amazing talent! Also, if you have a chance… visit

for more information! Videos of Charlie can also be found on youtube. Ch-check it out!!!
Keep supporting our local artists!!!

JOHNNY FLOOD

Johnny Flood is a sax player hailing from Jacksonville, Florida. Johnny is as sweet as the music he produces. I met him for the first time two years ago when I first moved to Jacksonville and ever since then, I have been proud to say “I know him!” whenever the band takes a break between sets, and you can hear people commenting about the great music and “that amazing saxophone”.

Johnny has been seen with other local musicians from the Jacksonville area including acts like Charlie Walker, Nate Holley, Split Tone, and John Earle. He brings in a soulful approach to every genre, no matter what the band you came to see is playing. Always friendly and always willing to bring smiles through music, you can easily contact Johnny to play a wedding, birthday, grand opening, or any other sort of gig for the right price. Trust me, the cost is worth every penny once you hear him play.

MORE COMING SOON!!!

***SHORT SAMPLE ARTICLE WRITTEN FOR A JOB I APPLIED FOR WRITTEN JULY 6TH, 2011***

There are many different genres of music heard throughout the streets of Jacksonville Beach. An establishment on almost every corner, it’s more than likely that you will catch a live band playing different styles of cover songs or a good set of originals.
In a number of these different acts, there has been one particular local Jacksonville resident musician, who has graced the stage with them. Johnny Flood, a very talented saxophone player with many years of experience can turn any song into a soulful tune. Many listeners have been left speechless once they reach the end of a set which he has played. Johnny can be seen and heard almost every day of the week and not only at the beach bars, but he has also been featured with bands that travel up north to Georgia and even down to the southern parts of Florida.

Here is a local band from Honolulu, Hawaii that I am into…thedeadbeats consist of 5 talented, young, and (that’s right!) good looking men. They have vocalist, Harumi, bassist Bret, drummer Micah, Matty on the saxy sax, and Ethan on the keys. You can find recordings of them on youtube or find out more about them and their gigs on facebook.

[Biography:taken from facebook:] The Deadbeats formed midway thru 2007 and are pretty much true to their name. They drink and jam and beg for change. With a charismatic, neighborly optimistic approach on life combined with Jazzy-hip-hopy-funky-rocky-super-dopetronical beats and charmingly lucid lyrics the Deadbeats will be the last to take themselves seriously, but seriously take you.
